The Signs of NPD and How to Escape a Harmful Household

Families are being torn apart by narcissists, with 1% of the population officially diagnosed with narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) but far more living undiagnosed, experts say. Although everyone may display certain levels of narcissistic behavior, when it reaches an extreme level, it may be a cause for concern.

Those with NPD often are characterized by their poor communication, lack of boundaries or empathy, control issues and unhealthy competitive nature. They often exhibit other signs as well, such as gaslighting, blame-shifting, triangulation, playing the victim or minimizing the feelings of others. These manipulative tactics may be a warning sign that involved partners need to consider an escape plan.

To safely escape a narcissist, slow and careful planning with the proper professional support and intentional action are key. For example, connecting with a family lawyer to ensure that all finances and paperwork are in order can be helpful. Once the victim has made their escape and contacted the proper authorities of the harm, taking action to remain separated is imperative. Limited contact and constant distance is the best way to remain safe.

While narcissism is not a curable disorder, healing is always possible following a separation for partners and children affected by an NPD spouse.
