Most children’s coding programmes are organised around tools. Learn Scratch, then learn Python, then learn a web stack. Coco Coders organises around problems instead, and the shape of its calendar is where that choice becomes visible.
The company, founded in 2016 by Elizabeth Tweedale, runs ten-week foundation blocks followed by four-week deep dives. The foundation block builds technical capability. The deep dive attaches that capability to something that exists in the world.
In an ocean conservation deep dive, students do not begin with plastic pollution as a topic. They begin with Mr. Trash Wheel, the solar-powered, googly-eyed device that intercepts debris in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, and study it as an engineered response to a defined problem. Then they build a game or simulation of their own.
“It’s saying, here was a problem, here was the solution. Now, what’s your idea?” Tweedale said.
The four-week length is doing specific work. It is long enough for a student to carry one idea through design, failure and revision, and short enough that a child who disliked the theme is not trapped in it for a term. Ten weeks of foundations before each dive means the technical ceiling rises between cycles rather than resetting.
Coco Coders teaches school-age children in live online classes, group and private, covering Scratch, Python, HTML, CSS and JavaScript. Lessons are recorded for students who miss them and subscriptions can be paused, which are retention mechanics as much as pedagogical ones.
The curriculum design followed a round of interviews with US high school principals, who told the team that incoming students lacked both technical fluency and any working map of the professional world. The second gap is the one the deep dives target. A student who studies a real piece of civic infrastructure has seen that somebody engineered it, somebody maintains it, somebody funds it, and that none of those people appear in a careers brochure.
The supporting evidence is not company-generated. The OECD reported in 2020 that seven-year-olds’ career aspirations, already shaped by gender and social background, change little by seventeen. Education and Employers found in 2018, surveying more than 20,000 primary children, that under one percent had learned about their chosen job from a school visitor.
