What is IMO

The International Mathematical Olympiad, or IMO, is an annual mathematics competition held by the Science Olympiad Foundation (SOF). The purpose of the Olympiad, which is open to kids in grades 1 to 12, is to identify and assist individuals who have the potential to become future scientists or technologists. IMO also assists pupils in competing against students from all across the country or the world. It allows them to assess their mathematical abilities. The IMO results provide students with an indication of their academic progress. After competing in the Olympiad, the student receives a Student Performance Report (SPR) that includes a full analysis of their performance.

The organizer of IMO, SOF, is a non-profit educational organization dedicated to the academic advancement of pupils. National Cyber Olympiad (NCO), National Science Olympiad (NSO), International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO), International English Olympiad (IEO), International Company Secretaries Olympiad (ICSO), and International General Knowledge Olympiad are among the national and international Olympiads organized by the foundation (IGKO). For more than two decades, the SOF has worked to promote a scientific mindset among students across the country through innovative programs.

Students in grades 1 to 12 who desire to assess their academic level in mathematics can apply for IMO. All of the participants must first pass the Level 1 test before moving on to the Level 2 exam.

  • Level 1:

Level 1 test All students in grades 1 to 12 are eligible to take the Level 1 exam, regardless of their grades. The more loosened eligibility standards help to increase the number of students who participate. The students in grades 1 to 12 who are pursuing schooling in the United States or abroad are eligible to take the IMO Level 1 exam.

  • Level 2:

Only students who achieve a minimum performance level in the Level 1 exam are considered for the Level 2 exam. The following students are eligible to take the Level 2 exam:

  1. The top 5% of students in each class will be qualified for the Level 2 exam.
  2. The top 25 zone and class rank holders will also be considered.
  3. Top students from each participating school, where at least 10 students from a class take the exam and score 50% or higher.
  4. The highest rank holder in section-wise registration would be qualified for Level 2.


Eligible students should contact their schools to apply for IMO. Students can apply to their schools by following the steps below:

  1. The prospectus with the registration forms will be sent to the schools that have registered with SOF.
  2. As a result, schools must first register them with the SOF. The IMO registration forms can then be obtained from the student’s respective schools.
  3. If the school has not yet registered with SOF, the prospectus can be requested by contacting SOF.
  4. SOF can be contacted by phone or email by schools.
  5. Interested students should apply by completing the IMO registration form and submitting it to their respective schools with all of the information required.
